Renting a Car in Stuttgart: The Honest Guide

Where to pick up in Stuttgart, how the Umweltzone and parking work, what the displayed price must include, and the mistakes that cost you at the counter.

If you are renting a car in Stuttgart, pick it up where the drive begins: at the airport for a direct run to the Black Forest or Lake Constance, at the Hauptbahnhof (the main station) if you arrive by train, at a district branch for several days in the city. More important than the location, though, is the price before you pay: the rate, the cover, the excess, the deposit and every extra must be fully visible before you book.

Stuttgart does not make life easy for drivers: a steep-sided basin, sharp hillsides, narrow streets in Heslach or Gablenberg — and the whole municipal area is an Umweltzone, a low-emission zone. This guide takes it in order: the pick-up point, the Umweltzone and parking, what belongs in the price, the deposit, the traps at the counter, and the drives people actually rent for here.

Viktigt att veta
  • Choose the pick-up point by destination: the airport for a trip south, the Hauptbahnhof for a train arrival, a district branch for a week in town.
  • All of Stuttgart is a low-emission zone. Rental cars normally carry the sticker — have it confirmed at handover and check the rules with the city of Stuttgart.
  • The displayed price must include everything: cover and excess, the fuel policy, additional drivers, mileage, and the service fee as its own line.
  • The deposit is usually a pre-authorisation on the main driver's credit card — settle the amount and what it covers before booking, not at the counter.
  • With DRIVO, cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pick-up, and confirmation is instant.

City centre, Hauptbahnhof or airport: where to pick up

The pick-up points differ less in the cars than in everything around them. At the airport in Echterdingen the desks sit together, choice is wide and opening hours are long — in exchange an airport surcharge is often added, and it has to appear in the displayed price. The Hauptbahnhof puts you back on a train quickly, but the walking routes around the Stuttgart 21 building site are longer than you expect and they keep changing. District branches are calmer and open for fewer hours: before booking, check that the branch is even staffed at your planned return time.

The Umweltzone, the basin and parking

The basin is not a postcard detail, it is the reason for the strict air-quality rules: in the Talkessel the air stands still. The whole municipal area is an Umweltzone, and only a car with the right Feinstaubplakette, the emissions sticker on the windscreen, may enter; it follows the vehicle's emissions class, and without the correct one you risk a fine. Professional rental fleets carry it as a matter of course — still, ask to see it. For parts of the Talkessel and districts such as Bad Cannstatt or Feuerbach, extra restrictions on diesel vehicles were added and then repeatedly adjusted. Rules like these change: rely on the city of Stuttgart's own information.

  • Space is scarce in the basin: multi-storey car parks around Schlossplatz, the Hauptbahnhof and the centre are the realistic answer.
  • Many residential quarters are resident-permit zones; without a permit you need a ticket from the machine or an app.
  • The Weinsteige and the climbs to Degerloch are steep and narrow — a compact car here is common sense, not thrift.
  • Van or motorhome: check car-park height and length limits in advance, as many city-centre entrances are low.

What the displayed price must include

An honest rental price is not a teaser rate with footnotes, and that is exactly where traditional counters and the big chains disappoint most often. With DRIVO every cost is shown before you pay, including the service fee, which appears as its own line and is refunded with a free cancellation or an agency cancellation. If you have a question, support comes in five languages — English, French, Spanish, Italian and Arabic — over WhatsApp or the in-app concierge.

  • Cover and excess: what is covered, and what you carry yourself if something happens?
  • Mileage: an included package or unlimited, and what happens if you go over.
  • Fuel policy: full to full is the fair version; a flat refuelling charge is the classic add-on.
  • Additional drivers, young drivers, child seats, winter tyres, cross-border travel.
  • Surcharges by location and hour, one-way fee, service fee.

Deposit, excess and the mistakes at the counter

The deposit is where most rentals fall apart. It is normally held as a pre-authorisation on a credit card in the main driver's name: the money never leaves the account, but it stays blocked until the car comes back. If the card has no headroom, you do not get the key. With DRIVO the deposit and what it covers are visible before booking, and anyone wanting a lower excess can add an optional full-protection product at checkout.

  1. 1Bring a credit card in the driver's own name and check the available limit beforehand.
  2. 2Carry your licence and ID, plus the international version if the licence is not in Latin script.
  3. 3Film the car all the way round before driving off, wheels and windscreen included, have every mark written into the handover report, and check the fuel level and odometer reading against what the car shows.
  4. 4Do not buy extra cover at the counter under time pressure, and on return ask for confirmation that there is no new damage.

Out of the basin: Black Forest, Lake Constance, Swabian Jura

Most people renting here are not renting for the city but for what surrounds it. The Schwäbische Alb, the Swabian Jura, starts practically at the city limits; the northern Black Forest is a morning; Lake Constance is a long day, or better, a weekend. If you cross a border, remember the Vignette.

  • Swabian Jura: Burg Hohenzollern, the Große Lautertal valley, the Blautopf spring near Blaubeuren — tight hairpins and the region's first snow cover in winter.
  • Northern Black Forest: the Schwarzwaldhochstraße ridge road, Freudenstadt, the valleys towards Baiersbronn. Lake Constance: Konstanz, Meersburg, Lindau — set off early, the lakeside roads jam in season.
  • Austria and Switzerland require a Vignette for their motorways; in Germany the Autobahn is toll-free for cars. Check first that your agreement allows cross-border travel.
  • For a move or a tour there are vans and utility vehicles, motorhomes and campervans alongside cars, where local supply exists.

The rules that matter in a rental car

  • Inside built-up areas the limit is 50 km/h; outside them it is 100 km/h for cars.
  • On a large part of the motorway network there is no general speed limit. Where nothing is posted, the Richtgeschwindigkeit of 130 km/h applies — an advisory speed, not a limit; drive faster and you can be held partly liable in a crash.
  • On the remaining sections the posted limit applies, commonly 100 km/h, 120 km/h or 130 km/h, for instance at city approaches, through roadworks and in noise-sensitive areas.
  • Alcohol: 0.5 g/l; in the probationary period and under 21 it is 0.0 g/l. A warning triangle, a high-visibility vest and a first-aid kit must be carried.
  • On the Autobahn you keep right and must not overtake on the right; in slow-moving traffic an emergency corridor is formed between the left-hand lane and the one beside it.

Does a rental car in Stuttgart need an emissions sticker?

Yes. The whole municipal area is a low-emission zone, and only vehicles with the matching Feinstaubplakette on the windscreen may enter. Professional rental fleets normally carry it — check at handover and look up the current state of the rules with the city of Stuttgart itself.

Airport or Hauptbahnhof — which is the better pick-up?

The airport at Echterdingen has the widest choice, the longest hours and direct motorway access heading south, but an airport surcharge is often added. The Hauptbahnhof suits train arrivals and short rentals, with extra time allowed for the building site.

Can I rent in Stuttgart without a credit card?

It depends on the branch. The deposit is usually held as a pre-authorisation on a credit card in the main driver's name, which is why many suppliers insist on one. Some accept other payment routes; that is set out in the terms of the offer.

Do I need winter tyres for the Alb or the Black Forest?

Germany has a situational winter-tyre obligation: road conditions such as ice or packed snow decide, not a date. On the Alb and in the Black Forest that can apply early in autumn and late into spring — confirm the tyres when you book.
