Cancelling a car rental in France: your rights and the deadlines

Cancellation, non-refundable rates, no-shows and card pre-authorisations: what a French rental contract actually says, and which deadlines matter.

In France you can cancel a car rental at any time, but no law guarantees you a refund: the cancellation terms of your own booking are what decide. It comes down to two things, the rate you chose — refundable or prepaid — and the moment you tell the rental company, in writing.

So the real decision is not made on the day you cancel: it is made before you pay. Checking the cancellation window before you book takes a few seconds, and it is what separates a free cancellation from money that is simply gone.

Viktigt att veta
  • Car hire falls outside the right of withdrawal: your contract is the rule.
  • Refundable rate: you can cancel inside the stated window. Prepaid non-refundable: nothing is owed to you, beyond goodwill.
  • Cancel in writing, before the cut-off time in the terms of sale, and keep the acknowledgement.
  • A card pre-authorisation is not a charge: the question is whether the money was taken or merely held.
  • On DRIVO, cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pick-up, and the DRIVO service fee is refunded with it.

Where your cancellation terms actually live

People looking for their rights usually look in the wrong document. The cancellation rules are not in some general text: they are in your booking, in four places. Read them before you pay, because afterwards the discussion is only about what you agreed to.

  • The summary shown just before payment, where the words free cancellation until a given date appear — or do not.
  • The conditions générales de vente, the seller's general terms of sale, accepted with a tick box.
  • The confirmation e-mail and the booking voucher, which restate the rate you picked.
  • The rental contract signed at the counter: it governs the rental itself, not the cancellation of an online booking.

Refundable or prepaid non-refundable

French rental companies almost always offer two families of rate for the same vehicle. The refundable one leaves you a way out. The prepaid one, described as non-refundable, is charged immediately and shown at a lower price: you pay the difference in flexibility, because the agency is holding one specific vehicle on specific dates.

Cancelling inside the windowRefund of what was chargedNo refund provided for
Changing datesUsually possible, subject to availabilityOften treated as a cancellation

Neither formula is a trap in itself: the trap is buying the second while believing you have the first. If your dates are not firm, the refundable rate is still the better calculation, even at a higher headline price.

The right of withdrawal does not apply here

Many travellers assume they have 14 days to change their mind about an online purchase. That cooling-off period does exist for distance selling, but the rules carve out one category: transport services, vehicle rental, accommodation and leisure services supplied on a specified date or for a specified period. Car hire falls inside that carve-out.

The logic is simple: the agency has set aside one given vehicle on given days, and availability released at the last minute cannot be resold. In practice, only your own contract's cancellation terms govern. For the general distance-selling rule and its exceptions, rely on the official French government consumer information, which changes over time. And be wary of anyone who promises you the outcome of a complaint in advance.

The three deadlines that matter

A cancellation case is won or lost on hours, not on arguments. Three deadlines shape the process, and they have nothing to do with one another.

  1. 1The end of the free-cancellation window: often 48 hours before pick-up, sometimes 72 hours, sometimes the same day. It is the only cut-off that changes the amount.
  2. 2The pick-up time written on the booking: past it, you move from being late to being absent, and the treatment changes.
  3. 3The refund processing time: it starts the day your written request is received, not the day you decided to cancel.

Notify whoever is named on your booking voucher: the agency if you dealt with it directly, otherwise the platform. Use a channel that leaves a trace — e-mail, an in-app message, instant messaging. A phone call alone proves nothing, especially at railway stations and airport zones, where counters often change operator.

Pre-authorisation, deposit, actual charge

This is the most common misunderstanding. An empreinte bancaire, the French term for a card pre-authorisation, is not a payment: it lowers your available card limit without the money leaving the account. An actual charge, by contrast, shows up as a debited transaction on the statement. Before you claim a refund, look at which of the two lines you have.

  • A pre-authorisation releases itself after a period set by each bank.
  • Only a real charge can be refunded.
  • The refund goes back to the card used to pay, not in cash.
  • If the card has expired meanwhile, the card network can usually attach the transaction to the reissued card; flag it in writing anyway.
  • The security deposit quoted before booking is not a cancellation fee: two separate subjects.

When the agency cancels, late pick-up, no-show

When it is the agency that cancels

This case has nothing in common with the previous one. If the agency cancels, or no longer has the vehicle you booked, you are not the one in breach: ask for written confirmation of the cancellation and its reason, then a concrete solution — a vehicle of at least the same category, or the return of the sums charged. Keep that message.

Arriving late and not arriving at all

Being late is not cancelling. Many contracts hold the vehicle for a limited time after the stated hour, then release it. A delayed flight or a missed train works in your favour only if you warn the agency before the pick-up time, in writing. Without that message you are treated as a no-show: on a prepaid rate nothing comes back; on a refundable rate not cancelled in time, cancellation fees apply.

What to keep as proof

A cancellation is almost always settled amicably, provided you have five documents at hand. File them at the time of booking, not on the day of the dispute.

  • The summary or booking voucher, with the rate and the cancellation wording.
  • The cancellation message you sent, with its date and time.
  • The acknowledgement or the rental company's cancellation confirmation.
  • The bank statement showing the charge, then the refund.
  • If it stalls, a written complaint to customer service, then referral to a consumer mediator.

What DRIVO changes before you pay

DRIVO is a marketplace for renting directly from independent and local agencies, and from private owners. The price shown is complete before payment: every cost appears, including the DRIVO service fee, on its own line and refunded with a free cancellation or an agency cancellation. Confirmation is instant, cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pick-up, and the security deposit and what it covers are visible before you book. An optional full-protection add-on can be added at checkout to lower the excess. Listings and support exist in five languages — English, French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic. Beyond cars there are vans and utility vehicles, motorhomes and campervans where local supply exists. Each listing's own terms still need reading.

Can you cancel a car rental in France without a fee?

Yes, if you cancel inside the window set by your terms of sale and the rate is refundable. Outside that window, or on a prepaid non-refundable rate, the contract provides for no money coming back.

Does the right of withdrawal apply to car rental?

No. Renting a vehicle for a specified date falls within the carve-out for transport and leisure services. The 14 days of distance selling therefore do not apply: only your cancellation terms count. For the general rule, consult the official French government consumer information.

I booked a non-refundable rate: can I get anything back?

The contract does not provide for it, but nothing stops you asking. A written, courteous, documented request — hospital stay, bereavement, cancelled flight — sometimes earns a goodwill gesture or a postponement. If you bought cancellation cover, go to the insurer.

Will my card pre-authorisation be returned after a cancellation?

Since a pre-authorisation was never debited, there is nothing to return: the hold releases after the period your bank applies. If you see a genuinely debited transaction, ask in writing for it to be refunded to the card used.

Who should I send my cancellation to?

Whoever took the booking: the agency if you booked directly, otherwise the platform. Always in writing and before the cut-off time, keeping a copy of the message sent and the reply received.
